TWO CHUCKWAGONS AND SOME BICARBONATE......

The Boss looking a little green.....

There is one thing I like about the South.....BBQ........ Me and the "Boss" being both Italian were foreign to BBQ before moving to Georgia....For the past 24 years we have been eating the "All You Can Eat" specials at Sonny's BBQ joint. Now Sonny's used to have something called The Chuckwagon......for $8.99 you could eat all you could of everything they served.....Yes, you heard me...all you could eat of ribs, pulled pork, chicken, turkey, fries, corn on the cob, baked beans, slaw, Brunswick stew and garlic toast....and I think I have left something out? Anyhoo, I recently read that Sonny's is going bankrupt so I told the husband we had to make sure we got our last meal before they close down. Last night we drove up to Woodstock (home of our 24 hr. Walmart) to find Sonny's had died......Locked up tighter then a drum Sonny's name was even removed from the side of the building....not to be discouraged we hopped on I-75 and drove down to the Big Chicken over on Cobb Parkway and are happy to announce that the Sonny's across the street from the Chicken is still alive and well.....No longer having the Chuckwagon...which could explain their bankruptcy problems....they were offering the "All You Can Eat Chicken".....At $7.99 you basically get everything they offer as sides plus the chicken.

Both me and Tiny ordered up, put a large stack of napkins beside us and picked our favorite squeeze bottle of BBQ sauce....The Boss likes Mild and I prefer the Sweet.....What occurred next should not be seen my children....We ate like we were both going to the Big House later in the evening....I think I saw sparks fly at one point when Tiny was buttering up his second ear of corn. He made me make a spectacle of myself by de-boning his chicken breast but in that surroundings no one even gave it a second thought...I alone went through 6 hand wipes before even finishing my meal....Just as we were ready to explode the waitress brought over 3 more plates with 2 breasts, 3 legs and 3 thighs....she was kidding, right? When we couldn't possibly eat another bite I asked her if they were just going to throw out all the un-touched chicken we couldn't eat, ofcourse I knew the answer was yes because we all know you can't get a doggie bag at an AYCE....she was very kind and brought us back a paper bag to bring bones home to the dog......wink, wink.....the funny thing was it really was for Boo, not the bones ofcourse but the chicken. Boo loves the chicken......After leaving the waitress a nice tip for her attentive service she *carried* us both out to the car and husband vowed not to eat again until February......me on the other hand promptly upon entering the house went for a bowl of coffee ice cream with chocolate jimmies.......Hey, a girls gotta have dessert!!

Oh my. What a fabulous place that Sonny's is. I'm glad you found another one. How in the world can they serve so much for so little?? I ask myself?? Then you go to another place and get charged wayyyy more for wayyyy less.
I know that you have wonderful places to eat in the states and at fabulous prices.
How nice tha tyou could take home a doggy bag too.
enjoy the day...

LOL! The Sonny's by me closed a while ago (on Spring road). I think they went out of business because so many other BBQ places have sprung up around here. It was never a favorite of mine though. I like my BBQ sauce cooked on my food. I don't like it poured on after or like a side dish. Jim N Nicks is really good on S. Cobb Dr. where the old Home Depot Landscaping used to be.

That's my problem with taking stuff to Goodwill - I always have to go in to see what they have! At least I drop off more than I pick up! Good for you in getting so organized this year- it feels good to get rid of clutter. I really hate having garage sales so I usually go the Goodwill route.

I've only visited a Sonny's once and I remember it to be delicious. As for Souther Bar-be-que, I love Speedy Pig in Fayetteville. Since we no longer live in Fayette county, I probably will not have the opportunity to taste their fare again. Guess I'm on the look out for a new place!

Oh boy, oh boy! That looks like OUR kind of place to eat, too! We love a good BBQ dinner. Our town has a good diner, but I just know that yours is better back east! My hubby got a new smoker in the fall and has been practicing the art of making a good brisket.

Ice cream? You bet!!

PS: Happy New Year, Sue!!!!!

Yummy looking food! I really wouldn't have to eat until February. When you get old you really can't eat as much - nature's way of compensating for the no metabolism thing, I guess. Have a great week! Sally

When its all you can eat for $7.99, you eat ALL that you want, that's my motto, my mouth is watering thinkin of Southern food! Tonight we're having salmon and broccoli-sounds boring doesn't it?

heeheehee, I love this story!! I'm not much of a BBQ lover, but could you send me some homemade Tortellini? We have one pretty good BBQ place here. I'm the only nut in the bag that doesn't appreciate it.

I have never heard of Sonny's but it sure looks and sounds yummy. I just have to say that your grand daughter is so cute! My daughter and I love all the months, we do not have a favorite, it would be to hard to choose.

haha! I don't know how to say this... but going to college in the south and being surrounded by the food was part of why I became a vegetarian. haha. So anyway, that corn looks amazing... ;) I do love many parts of Southern food like fritters. Mmm.

I love "all you can eat" places! We go to a couple of sushi places that offer all you can eat. Of course it is the new year and we are trying to diet a little to make up for the extra we ate for the holidays.

Glad you were able to find your dream food!

Oh how we love Sonny's! We always go when we visit our friends in Tennessee. The one in my parent's old town in TN closed last year and I swear people wept in the streets...really! : )

We have a great BBQ place here but they do not have all you can eat (My ample rump thanks them!)
but heck...it is still a taste treat.

Okay, it is now after 1am, I need to head off to bed and I have a hankerin' for BBQ. Thanks a LOT!! *laugh*

Love,
Sue

Girl, stick with me...I know all the good BBQ joints within a 30 minute drive of May-retta...as the old folks say. Have you tried, The Barbecue Kitchen in East Point, Harolds in the bad side of town, down in ATL, or Two Brothers up in Ballground? They are all very different and very good. The best Brunswick stew I've ever eaten in my life is at Harolds. That's Lewis Grizzard old haunt...if you remember Lewis. Two Brothers has sawdust floors and wonderful sweet tea, and of course great barbeque. It's only open a few days a week so call 'em before you go. And if you go, be sure to get their home made icecream for dessert. Next time you are headed to or away from the airport (Hartsfield) stop by The Barbecue Kitchen. They serve a lot more than just BBQ, but they do have great barbecue, too. My favorite thing there is baked hen and dressing...which is a Wednesday or Sunday item only, as I recall. Then there's a little place called Melears...ok, I'll stop. :-)Susan
