OPEN ALL NIGHT.......

One of the big things we missed when we moved from Jersey
was the Open All Night diners...
Jersey is known as the "Diner State"....and there really is a diner on every corner...
Us Jerseyians love to eat no matter the time of day...
Me and the Boss often frequented the O.B. diner at the Point Pleasant Circle down the shore..
It was not unusual for us to drive down there at 2:00 in the morning
for a bite to eat......
We love diners....
We really miss the diners.....

With their bad food in the middle of the night....
Like Fries with gravy....

And our personal favorite from the O.B.
Rice pudding....
But we don't have "Open All Nite" diners down here in the South....
and if there are any we haven't found one in the past
24 years....
There is the Marietta Diner....
but we ate there once and despite what Guy Fieri said about it on
Diners Drive Ins and Dives....
it was not a Jersey diner...
So what does the Boss and Wife do when they have a
Hankering
for diner food late at night.....

We fire up the much used JennAir
can you see the clock says
"1:06"
That would be A.M.
and
we have breakfast.....
What's breakfast in the middle of the night without some bacon...

And ofcourse you have to have pancakes....
From Scratch I might add....

and even half asleep I was able to make perfect round ones....

The Boss prefers his with fresh fruit....

And so that is what we did tonight....
kitchen was cleaned by 2:30....
And I heard my father's voice saying....
"I have never seen anyone make such a mess so fast....and be able to
clean up just as fast"....
and speaking of the folks....
My mother would have been 95 today....
So Happy Birthday Millie...
Now get to bed.

We had cupcakes at 2:30 (it doesn't count though, I had made them during the RHONY).... Pancakes look good, but were crispy crowns involved???

It's so ez to make a mess in the kitchen. Nice when the hubby helps w clean up!
In NJ in the early 70s, we used to go to the bars until 2 am on Wed.(Ladies Night)then off to the diner! Can't imagine now!!!!!! Eddie & the Cruisers was filmed at the Jersey Shore...& the famous Tony Marts.

WE LOVE DINERS, WE THINK THEY SERVE THE BEST FOOD. I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU WERE UP AND MAKING BREAKFAST AT 1:06 AM! AT THAT TIME I AM DEAD TO THE WORLD. THERE USE TO BE A TIME MANY MANY YEARS AGO WHEN THAT WAS STILL AN EARLY EVENING. NOT SO MUCH NOW. BUT THEN AGAIN....GET ME A ROOM WITH A GROUP OF WOMEN THAT CAN CHAT AND I'LL BE UP THEN AND PROBABLY WANTING PANCAKES AND BACON. LOL

Oh, I love diners, too. When I used to travel to NY on business a lot, I always visited the diners on Long Island. But right down the street from us now, is the Sandy Springs diner. Great breakfasts!
Enjoy your trip!

Happy birthday Millie ... from Helen. I know how much you must miss her. My mother passed away three years ago ~ today. We had all night diners in St. Louis in the 50's and 50's .... loved dropping in at all hours. Those were the days.

Diners not only have good food they are fun to visit. Never know who/what you will see. Your late night/early morning breakfast looked good to me!

Now why didn't you call me? I'm just up the road!

That looked delicious - but can you eat that late and then lay down - digestion wise?

Love,
Sandie

You guys must be night owls. My kitchen closes at 6:00 pm - the last thing I want to do is cook at 1:00 am. It is so cold and rainy today that we went OUT for pancakes, eggs & bacon for supper tonight - real comfort food. Have a great weekend. Sally

I would be twice as fat! I had a friend once who always ordered gravy with fries..here we ask for fry sauce! :D

Another funny post... you and the boss have some pretty strange habits! My kitchen doesn't stay open after midnight, but I have a lot of trouble getting farmer Pa in to eat supper. Usually it's 9 PM before we're finished eating; maybe that's why we don't need to eat again in the middle of the night. Your food looked great!

Hi again...the mountain, is right behind us! You win! We are always out there and in it and on it! We ride our horses way up in it's canyon...it's just breath taking. People stop all year round and take pictures! :D

Those pancakes look delish. I don't know if my stomach could take that at 1 am though. I'm getting to be such a wimp... Loved all your outdoor pics. Mimi

Wow, the last time I ate a meal in the middle of the night was in college. I think my friends and I threw our jackets over our pj's and went to Denny's:>) Now I'm in bed by 11:30 tops. It all looks good though!

Great post! When I moved to Jersey from New York, I thought I would be leaving behind my Long Island diners..happiness..Jersey had diners too! Maybe we have been in the same diner at the same time in years past and never knew it. I used to love the Clairmont diner in what was it...West Orange? Then I found out that the owner opened a new place in Woodbridge called Harolds. Crazy expensive and worth every penny...such a NY girl.

Your mother would have been around my mother's age. I just passed the anniversary of Mama's death, and I can't believe she's been gone for 20 years!

What about I-Hop, Sue? They have eggs, and they will clean up for you! LOL!

I loved this post.

XO,

Sheila :-)

We love diner food too! When I was younger and thinner we would go out for root beer floats and a hamburger...those were the days!
Now we love Cobb salads :-)

Your impromptu late night breakfast looks so good!

Happy bithday in heaven to your Mom!

Sue -

I saved a booth for you!

This is a NJ rite of passage. When you are old enough (or at least have convincing ID) to go out to the bars afterwards there is always the trip to the diner! Now if you were in Pt Pleassant, I have no doubt you were coming from Jenkinsons!

Once a Jersey Girl, always a Jersey Girl! (And we don't pump gas!)

I had read about french fries with gravy. It looks even worse than I thought! We have a bakery/restaurant here that's open all night, but since I'm usually in my pajamas by 9, I haven't had the need to seek it out. I'd have to go someplace with a drive-thru window.

I suppose you could hit the chain diners in desperation. (What in the world are you doing up those late night hours?!)

I have a friend who makes late-night trips to the 24-hr. supermarket for ice cream. She calls 'em night runs.

Love this post and wish I could go to a Jersey Joint for some great tasting food and the revolving cakes and pastry trays. How about the Italian cookies at the counter when you pay the bill which hit the spot while walking to your car on a full belly.

Grace and I often fix some goodies late at night in the Summer..long after the men go off to sleep. Who wants to share with them anyhoo!
Her favorite is when we boil eggs and make egg salad.
But I do think she would love your late night (early morning??) treat...
Not too many late night diners here, save for old Waffle House, and I have yet to see Guy Fieri visit one of them...oh but how I wish there were...

Love,
Sue

Heavenly birthday wishes for your mom.

There's just nothing like a good old Jersey diner! Like Mastoris!

Your breakfast looks great.

The only places i can think of that are open all night are Waffle House and Denny's, probably not what you are thinking of.

My husband would think I was nuts if I decided to cook breakfast at 1am. But then he thinks I'm nuts anyway.
