ITALIAN STREET FAIR FOOD...............

How can you resist making something with peppers when they look this gorgeous.... If you have ever been to an Italian street festival you probably have seen a food booth selling
Sausage and Pepper sandwiches...
there is nothing better...and this is what ate over the weekend....Little on work....
Big on flavor!!You'll need 1 pound of good Italian sausage...either sweet or hot. I only use sweet.
1 onion....a red, green and yellow or orange pepper. Make sure all seeds are washed away.
These peppers were extra jumbo so I used only a half of each color...
I also swear by Bertolli sauce....tomato-basil type.
some garlic salt freshly ground and a bit of olive oil..... Italian seasoning or fresh basil

fresh sausage is always easier to cut if you use kitchen shears....cut into bite size pieces...

Brown the sausage using a little olive oil to prevent initial sticking and add the onion...
I used to watch Jeff Smith "The Frugal Gourmet" years before he was indicted on abuse charges....no surprise...I met him and "Mr. Craig" once and let me tell you the man was very strange. Goodness knows what he did to poor Elmo.......Anyhoo, I always remember one thing he always use to say and it really works....
"Hot pan.....cold oil....food won't stick".....

after saute'ing for 5 minutes or so add the peppers.... season with the garlic salt or you can use regular garlic.....some salt and fresh ground pepper....

Add your sauce....you can also add some Italian seasoning, some fresh basil or oregano...whatever taste you like....Simmer for about a half hour....

Serve it up on some crusty Italian rolls and some homemade fries and you'll swear you were on the streets of "Little Italy" in New York....

That looks wonderful. Reminds me of a recipe for spaghetti with Italian sausage and peppers that I clipped out of Southern Living not too long ago.

This looks good! I use scissors too..
I went to a "Sagra" in Italy..Is that what you mean? Under tents..and you sit and eat outside cafeteria style? All the different districts?

I had a nice time living that tradition.

I'll try your hot pan cold oil:) Thanks!

@That looks so good and easy. Thanks for the recipe.
We always watched Jeff Smith when we were newlyweds. Still saying "hot pan, cool oil, food won't stick". Good advice from a strange guy.
I have his books...

I'll have to write this one down for my son - he loves to cook and next year there'll be no cafeteria food.

As for me, can't do peppers or Italian sausage - they just don't agree with me.

Your killing me here, I LOVE those sandwiches...yum! I usually eat them without the sauce but that looks delish too.

I've fixed something similar and loved it. Must try it again - keep those ideas coming! Years ago, I also watched the frugal gourmet - he was strange, but I did learn some techniques. Have a good week. Sally

Being a veggie...the sausage doesn't do much for me but the peppers and that bread sure do! I love putting peppers in any kind of pasta.

The only thing better than sausage and peppers on a crusty roll is the aroma of sausage and peppers on a crusty roll!! Take me home to NY. Looks delicious - as always!! (P.S. Great looking peppers, too!)

Sue, Thank you for your sweet comment. I hope that as a Rosebud eventually I can help record some of the unbelievable stories these women have to tell so that future generations will hear them.
