WHO THE HELL IS MELKY CABRERA.......or Why Would Mom Want His Ball?

This is the question Daughter asked the Boss last week when he called her
All excited that he won in a sports auction Melky Cabrera'a signed ball and
"Real Live Worn During Spring Training"
Yankees Jersey....
Complete with certificates of authenticity!!
I'm sure poor daughter thought he totally lost his mind as she
wondered why in the world would I want a Yankees jersey...
and better yet who in the hell is Melky Cabrera?

This was to be a Christmas present and the Boss was having a hard time getting the
auction folks to give him shipping information....
So to back up a bit....
If you all have been following this blog for any length of time you know my past
history with sports figures namely the infamous
Mickey Mantle encounter and let's not forget
Ted Williams.....
So while watching the World's Series this year I kept asking the husband every time someone came up to bat...
"But where is Melky Cabrera?"
I must have asked this question 100 times over the course of the series....
Did I know who Melky was.....ofcourse not....he just had a "catchy name"
So when the husband saw his game jersey and signed ball come up on the auction block he bid....
and he won......
And the rest is "Sue doesn't know Sports Figures from Shinola" history....
I now know that Melki was signed to the Yankees when he was a mere 17 years old...
He's now 25 from the Dominican Republic and he plays a good game of ball...
So who knows maybe in 10 years or so he will be the next Ted Williams...

Mickey Mantle....well let's hope not!!

Well, you could have fooled me...I know NOTHING....zip, nada about sports. We live in Washington after all. Winning sports teams???? Nah...yep, I'd be a fair weather fan. I only want to watch winners. Brat. :-)

LOL Sue, my son loves Melky Cabrera! He has a Yankee t -shirt that says "GOT MELKY?" He is a good player with a good future ahead of him.

Did your husband bid through Steiner Sports web site? I've been trying to win a Dave Winfield autographed ball through them for a long time..he was a another favorite player of my son's when my son was a kid. I always get outbid :-(

Not a Yankees fan, don't really care about Melky Cabrera (Go Phillies! and my husband is a Mets fan), but my son does have a Mickey Mantle autograph.

Hi Sue,
Don't know much about baseball. Pa is not a fan; he says it is like watching paint dry. My soon-to-be son-in-law is from Brooklyn and is a huge fan of the game, but his team is the Mets. I think baseball is to the northeast like football is to the south... very rabid fans! Maybe someday you'll make big bucks on that ball!

Sue, We are such crazy kindred spirits!! I mentioned a while back that I thought Melky was one of the cutest Yankees, and everybody looked at me like I had two heads. Thanks for agreeing. I have also had some opportunities to meet ball players in my life. When I was 13, my next door neighbor had, Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris at his Bar Mitzvah. No, I was too stupid at the time to get autographs. My husbands family lived in the same town as Mickey Mantle and his house was on my father in laws mail route, and although he knew him, he never once asked for his autograph...go figure.
It was a great year for the Yankees and their fans..lets hope they can do it again next year.

Well, just a minute here Missy! Those game-worn jerseys should only be worn by bonafide fans! People like me who go to spring training in Florida for the sole purpose of giving the guys their pep talk for the upcoming season. People like me who gush over "my boys" like a proud mama on on-field photo day. Obsessiv...I mean, earnest fans like me who live for Opening Day! And I just have to say, once I did buy my game-worn jersey, I put in on once before DH had it framed and mounted to hang on the game room wall!

You got me all worked up! I can hardly wait for the season opener:

Mr. Magpie new and loved Ted Williams. We have a signed ball of his which is cherished.

I am with you in the Shinola category, but I am a Yankees fan. I just think they ARE baseball.

Sue, I just read the story about TW's daughter, and from what my DH says, TW was not like that. He was outgoing and generous. However TW didn't like the press much. Where publicity was concerned during the years he played, he let his bat do his talking for him. Mr. Magpie never met the daughter, only TW whom he really, really liked. Of course that doesn't redeem the way she acted. I still can't believe that MM acted like such a big jerk. He was my childhood baseball hero. Not any more! ;-)

I SEE DEAD PEOPLE.........a Blog Pause.

Daughter got a call on Wednesday at 4:00 a.m. from our home town Police Force..... It seems the "Big Boss" called them after seeing women in his closet and a dead man hanging from his Ceiling Fan.... Only Problem.......He doesn't have any ceiling fans in his house... Daughter...... having to make the decision what to do with him.....since we were home in Georgia sound asleep....and unable to hear even a bomb go off... Had the police take him to the local hospital...... Now the BB is heading towards 90 in a few months.... He lives alone and still drives.... We have been trying to get him into an Assisted Living Home for the past three years... He refused to budge.... He refused to let anyone into the house.. We also tried to get him to give up his license....to no avail.... The sad part is we could not get anyone to assist us... His doctor told us years ago that he was a grown man and we couldn't tell him what to do.... So back to the ER this Wednesday he was checked ...

TIME OUT..........................

In the best interest of my left hand I find it necessary to take a short break from blogging.......that nasty staph infection has refused to go away and with no signs of it improving I need to stop using the computer......every time I go online to type the finger resembles W.C.
