WHO THE HELL IS MELKY CABRERA.......or Why Would Mom Want His Ball?

This is the question Daughter asked the Boss last week when he called her
All excited that he won in a sports auction Melky Cabrera'a signed ball and
"Real Live Worn During Spring Training"
Yankees Jersey....
Complete with certificates of authenticity!!
I'm sure poor daughter thought he totally lost his mind as she
wondered why in the world would I want a Yankees jersey...
and better yet who in the hell is Melky Cabrera?

This was to be a Christmas present and the Boss was having a hard time getting the
auction folks to give him shipping information....
So to back up a bit....
If you all have been following this blog for any length of time you know my past
history with sports figures namely the infamous
Mickey Mantle encounter and let's not forget
Ted Williams.....
So while watching the World's Series this year I kept asking the husband every time someone came up to bat...
"But where is Melky Cabrera?"
I must have asked this question 100 times over the course of the series....
Did I know who Melky was.....ofcourse not....he just had a "catchy name"
So when the husband saw his game jersey and signed ball come up on the auction block he bid....
and he won......
And the rest is "Sue doesn't know Sports Figures from Shinola" history....
I now know that Melki was signed to the Yankees when he was a mere 17 years old...
He's now 25 from the Dominican Republic and he plays a good game of ball...
So who knows maybe in 10 years or so he will be the next Ted Williams...

Mickey Mantle....well let's hope not!!

Our good friend Pat at
is having a wonderful giveaway for the holidays...
a beautiful Lenox teapot so stop by her blog and leave a comment for a chance to
win this lovely piece of Lenox china....

KITCHEN EYE CANDY........This One's For You Alice!

My blogging friend Alice from www.simplydecorated.blogspot.com got me hooked on white kitchens......Alice loves white kitchens and very often posts pictures of her favorites......She works at a cooking store out in Northern California and well......she is just "Hooked on Kitchens"......but Alice hasn't posted since the first of September.....I miss her and I'm hoping all is well with her and her family...
She was always showing off great kitchen finds from both the Internet and from her shop...
So Alice if your still out there....I hope you come back to blogging soon....and this post's for you!!
This kitchen reminds me of daughters......
very simple....very clean lines and who doesn't love white subway tile!

But I'm a lover of red....I've been trying to convince daughter to add a little
punch of color into her new kitchen.....
A simple deconstructed swag adds such a statement to this window.....

See the loaf of bread on the left.....here's a little kitchen work desk...perfect spot
to sit and write your blog...
ooops.....that one apple picture is crooked...
And what are your thoughts on wallpaper....I'm a fan.

Now we're talking.....I'm all about the pot rack.....
If someone asked what is the one necessary thing you need in your kitchen...
My answer would be a big pot rack...
Mine is overloaded and I love having everything out in the open and easy to get to....
Ofcourse if it ever falls out of the ceiling like our ceiling fan did someone will be
killed...

Check out these ice boxes....very cool....literally.

more white but look at that floor!!
it looks like dark green to me but maybe it's just the light....
it gives life and personality to a galley kitchen...
What's not to love about this one....
Aren't those windows fabulous...
and the island stools go so well with the rustic beams on the ceiling....
adding a touch of contrast without being too dark....
I could cook in this one...
In the totally opposite direction these chrome stools are unexpected in today's
kitchen...
they could be from the 60's but they look great...
Bar stools not so good.....Island very good....big scale in the right of the picture...
Very Very Good!
notice the island is on wheels....
This one is just big....
and I don't know if I would have hung that chandelier above the table....
I'm a fan of pendent or school house lamps.....
double sinks.....real double sinks...see the double faucets...

Double pot racks..
Double the crap!!!

I love the blue check tile....and the plate rack built under the cabinet...

Another great checkered floor in a New York kitchen.

This is my favorite of the bunch....as a collector I could fill that wall unit with all sorts of
goodies...
What no white cabinets.....this is the kitchen of 2009..
How long will it stay in style...

no question what color this floor is....
I love the brown and white check...

Touches of 1940's green...

dark wood island top goes nicely with the dark wood floor..
Grandpa has old 1950's bar stools like these down in his basement...We've been trying for years to convince him to pass them along to us....
No go on that front...
His thoughts on the subject.....
"I'm not ready to die yet."
We have no idea what that means.....
But if we ever get them I will certainly be replacing the orange Naugahyde with something cute
Like these...
So I hope Alice that your still out there in Blogland and you get to see my version of some
great kitchen eye candy...
And to everyone else.....which was your favorite kitchen?

WILL WORK FOR TCHOTSKIS..........

Saturday was not a good day in this household.......I discovered late Friday night that Boo's mouth was still infected after his tooth extraction so first thing Saturday he was back at the vet...
On the ride home in the back of the Bug.....well I won't go into gory details but when I
got home the back seat of the car had to come out and luckily the weather has been in the 70's so
I was able to put down the top and air out the car....
With that said......Sunday I was in need of a "Mental Health Day"......
and nothing says "Make My day" like shopping....
After I made sure the Boss was well fed and content on the couch with many football games
to watch I was on the highway down past Atlanta Airport to
Scott's Antique Market.....A huge indoor and now outdoor market that is held one weekend out of the month it has gotten alot better in the past few years.....We always used to go to the Lakewood Fairgrounds which was a true flea market....good prices and just fun to go to.....But Lakewood closed down a number of years ago and Scott's had always been very overpriced.....
Building one still has it's fancy antiques.......but Building two has much better prices and more
fun stuff instead of stuffy stuff....
This is where I bought my giant moose head years ago....
The day was gorgeous in the high 70's and I enjoyed wandering around at the outdoor
stalls......where the people were very eager to make a good deal.....
My first purchase was......ofcourse.....Miss Liberty....Here she is at home with the rest of the
girls on my wall desk/shrine to the lady in the Harbor....
That would be her on the left and I paid a whopping $5.00 for her....the vendor wanted $10.
He was so funny....he kept explaining how he didn't think it was made in Japan and how unusual
the color of it was and how heavy it was......
Come on.....it was 5 bucks and it's a tacky Statue of Liberty....
Do I care where it was made.......
After wandering around outside I went in the huge building.....I believe there are over 2,000 dealers between the 2 buildings.... I didn't find any bargains but did spy the local
"Soul Food" concession and made plans to stop back for a bite after I was done
shopping.....
Back outside I stopped back at the man that sold me Miss Liberty and bargained him down on this set of 4 milk glass plates....He wanted $10.....then went down to $8. and then to $6. if I packed them up myself....I happily handed over the $6. and wrapped them myself...
He provided the paper.....
When I got home I discovered that the 4 milk glass cups I bought a few months ago at the
GW for 50 cents a piece fit and matched perfectly.....so for $8.00 I have a great set....
Perfect for a tablescape Thursday!
And then I found this little gem....isn't it cute....

Made by Fenton Glass Company it's a
"Puff Box"
from 1955/56....
used on a vanity tray I love the name and it cost all of $5.00

There was a lovely mother and daughter selling all sorts of goodies and the minute I stepped
into their booth they said "tell us what you like and we'll make you a good deal"....
I like people that are ready to make a sale....
they said how bad business has been with the economy and I commented that people have a
choice......
buy tchotskis or buy food....
I opted for the milk glass and she took $15. off the price....
I cringed at paying $20. but it's so pretty and I still had money to spare for lunch...

So with all my purchases made I went back inside to get something to eat...
They were even having a sale.....
Being waited on by a man that looked remarkably like
Snoop Dogg...
I feasted on hot turkey with stuffing and gravy....cranberry sauce...green beans..
mac and cheese and corn bread....All for $6.00....marked down from $8!!
I hesitated for a minute but everyone had plates of food so I figure what the hay...it has to be good....and it was delicious....

So.....I made great purchases.....had a great meal.....and had a good day all around....
A much needed good day.
I put on my big straw hat......put the top down on the Bug......
cranked up Benny Goodman on the CD player and I was waiting on
Jonesboro Road to get back on the highway.....
Stopping at the red light I found myself stopped next to a man holding a sign
declaring that he was homeless and needed money for
shoes.....clothes.....and food.....
No sign that he would be willing to work for these things he just wanted money....
And ladies wouldn't we all like to have money for more shoes.....
making brief eye contact I tried to stay back a bit.....
As the light changed and I went to drive away I hear him yell at me....
"Bitch".....

Is it any wonder that he's homeless and in need of new shoes with an attitude like that.
But I wasn't about to have him ruin my lovely Sunday!

ASIAGO-SPINACH ROULADE........Greek Style.

It's Foodie Friday and I thought after all this time of reading everyone else's post I would join in the fun....
Visit our hostess.....
To see all the other wonderful recipes.....
I know I'm Italian.....what am I doing making something with the word "Greek" in the title..
We are still watching what we eat but a few days a week I splurge and make something a bit fancy.....
With the price of meat skyrocketing I am always on the lookout for inexpensive cuts that I can turn into something special...
I used Top Round Steak thin sliced for this recipe and although not cheap at $4.79 a pound..
It was cut so thin that I was able to get 4 really large slices for a little over $4.00I layed out one piece at a time on a cutting board then topped it with this mixture.....
I sauteed a shallot that I diced fine.....I added some grape tomatoes that I cut in half....one package of frozen spinach thawed and drained well........ofcourse you can use fresh....a little garlic salt and fresh coarse ground pepper.....

I spread this over each piece of meat then put a thinly sliced piece of Asiago Cheese on top of the spinach.......I rolled up the beef and placed it seam side down in a roasting pan.....

I drizzled it with a little extra virgin olive oil....a little bit more kosher salt and pepper...... and baked it about 20 minutes in a 400 degree oven......

The Boss loves feta cheese after our last trip to Jersey....The son in law took us to a fabulous Greek restaurant in Manhattan and it was his first time trying feta......he loved it and has been eating it ever since.....
So I sprinkled some crumbled feta on top of the rolls after they came out of the oven.....

The little potatoes in the center of the plate...
I had made diced garlic/Parmesan potatoes the day before for breakfast...
Not one to waste a thing I re-heated it leaving it in the little ramekin that it was stored in....
it kept it's shape nicely....
and this was one delicious easy meal.....
and it looked good too!!

Well....Here's Another Fine "Blog" You've Gotten Me Into

A few months ago daughter launched a new blog and made the mistake of asking Mom to be a contributor......
After all 39 years of marriage brings alot of "stupid" stories to the table....
At our Blog lunch this week one of the ladies heard me talking about it and asked if
it was another Atlanta Blogger's site......
No....It would be daughter's and mine....
So with out further adieu I bring you the very first.......to my knowledge.....
Interactive Blog Site....
Where all you ladies with years and years of husband stories can go to vent.....
You can send your "stupid" stories of your Better Halves....to an e-mail address and have your story/pictures/cartoons.....published....
Without anybody knowing who you are.....
Great Idea Yes????
So when your sitting around on a boring Saturday night and you think back 20 years or so when the husband did something dumb......let's hear about it!!
to submit a witty story....
Come on Ladies I know you got good stuff to share.....because if we can't laugh at the husbands antics who can we laugh at....
And Guys......it's all done in fun and out of love....

ANDREA AND HIS NEW SHOES!!

It took 35 days to get there but Andrea finally got his birthday present in the mail on thursday!!
It seems Italian customs aren't very trustworthy of packages coming into their country
wrapped in Sesame Street paper....Mom reports the custom folks carefully unwrapped the boxes then carefully re-wrapped them....
Sorry custom guys.....Just sneakers....
And the shoes still fit!!!
Andrea's feet are growing at an alarming rate for a 2 year old but there is still room
for him to grow into them.....
How adorable is this little guy........
I was very happy to hear from Mom this morning but still reported the idiot from the
Post Office to his superiors.......
I'm just a natural born troublemaker.....

WHEN BLOGGERS MULTIPLY..................

It started with two...........Deb and Joyce decided to get together for lunch....then there was three
Not one to turn down a lunch invitation I hopped on board and was excited to being going
to a little bistro in Roswell Georgia called Red Salt....
I had never been there for lunch in fact I had never in all these years been to old downtown...
Before you knew it we had Cheri on board along with Rose then Sandi and then Karyn....
These ladies like to do lunch!!
Deb and Joyce got there early to secure a good spot right in the front window with
enough seating for the 7 of us.....
Susan.....we all missed you and hope you can join us next time....Here is Sandi....Karyn....Deb....Joyce and Cheri.....
At one point I kept watching the door for Sandi to arrive and a women walks in and I wave and say an excited Hi.....she looked at me like I was nuts....
Now I knew everyone that was coming and I also knew what everyone looked like.....
So leave it to me to randomly flag down a stranger.....
Ateast if this whole retired thing doesn't work out I can become a
Greeter at Wal-mart....

But where's Rose?
Our resident "SantaMaker"......

Here's Rose.....
Rose has a fabulous blog called.....
http://www.thesantamakersjourney.blogspot.com/
She is an amazing artist/crafts person and her Santa dolls are true works of art....

a restaurant with alot of ambiance.....we all loved the bare hanging bulbs over the tables....

The food was very good.....most of the ladies got salads.....Here is the Roasted Pear
Salad with chicken....

Ofcourse leave it to the Italian.....I had to order the pizza....
it was wonderful....

They finally threw us out of the place and I couldn't tell if the waitress was miffed because she brought the check then we made her take it back and bring us
7 separate ones.....Hey....that's what women do.....she should have known....
I think I'm going to use Cheri as my PR person for my Blog Book.....
Here she is holding it in front of the restaurant while the other ladies were saying....

"Would you please take that thing and go put it in your car....we've seen enough..."

Group shot....
Back row.....

Rose from .... http://www.santamakersjourney.blogspot.com/
Cheri.....at http://www.geergathering.blogspot.com/
ME....
and our new friend
Sandi..... http://www.chattycrone.blogspot.com/

Sandi has a wonderful blog and if you have never visited you need to make a point of stopping by....She writes everyday....Yes....Everyday...
With a little proverb....a bit of her life......a cartoon or two...and everyday she celebrates a famous person's birthday with a little biography....
I love reading biographies and she does a fantastic job of giving you a little info on famous people from all walks of life not just celebrities....
You will enjoy it I guarantee...

We managed to get two poor women that were passing by to take our picture....
Then some man came by and asked the two ladies if they wanted him
to take the picture so they could get in the shot.....
That's why we were all laughing because they told him...
"We don't know these women".....

And people wonder why I refer to her as
"Crazy Joyce"....
Her she is trying to sit atop the Elk....
I always tell her how much she reminds me of Diane Keaton in all those Woody Allen movies...
and in this picture she really resembles her...........

We were standing on the corner when Rose noticed the Webb Street
sign and then noticed a huge spider web attached to it....
If you look just south of the ST you can barely see it...
Make note to self.....next time bring the good camera....

Most of the ladies had to leave right after lunch but Rose... Joyce and Me decided to hit up
some of the local shops....
This beautiful tree and other wonderful Christmas decorations were everywhere in
a lovely shop called the Chandlery....

Lots of beautiful placemats and napkins....

My favorite....Tacky State pillows and glasses
reminiscent of the "state plates" from the 1950's.....

Ofcourse we are in Georgia so every good gift shop worth their weight in salt has
UGA items......Go Dawgs!!!!
Oh I can't believe I said that.....I'm from Jersey.....
Lots of those cute holiday dolls....
We then moved on to an antique warehouse .......
Where I was highly insulted by this apron......
Not So................
Cooking is an art.

I found some very overpriced milkglass....

Rose spotted these great dishes....all the pieces were only $34.00
Susan.....we thought about you and how you would have grabbed them up for
Tablescape Thursday's.........
How about some old wood skates.......puffy balls included!

and great old cameras............
And to bring an end to a fun day....here is an altered picture of Me and Joyce donning our
Beer and Vodka Goggles.....
Yes....two grown women....two grandmother's.....two sophisticated ladies of the North....
Making asses of ourselves.....
It was actually a whole picture but I had something stuck in one tooth and Joyce hates to have up close pictures taken....so to save me from hearing.....
"Take that picture of me off your blog".......
I give you half of us......
